Are You Expecting? Here are Some of the Skin Changes You Can Expect

Pregnancy is an event that changes a woman’s life forever. It even changes her skin. Below are some of the skin changes that a woman can expect during her pregnancy:

The pregnancy glow

This is one of the skin changes that most women look forward to. Blood circulation to the skin is increased during pregnancy and the sebaceous glands secrete more oil. Those changes create the pregnancy glow.

Acne

Acne is common during pregnancy because of the hormonal fluctuations that occur. The good news is that pregnancy-related acne is usually not as severe as teenage acne. The blemishes and pimples usually go away shortly after delivery. However, if a woman’s acne becomes bothersome, she should consult with a dermatologist.

Linea Nigra

Linea Nigra, which is better known as the dark line running up the stomach, is very common during the second trimester. This line occurs as the result of the abdominal muscles stretching and separating to accommodate the growing baby. Linea Nigra may be more noticeable on darker-skinned women. This line usually disappears shortly after a woman gives birth.

Spider veins

Spider veins are clusters of broken capillaries. They occur during pregnancy because the increased blood volume puts extra pressure on the capillaries. It is important to note that exposure to extreme heat or cold can exacerbate this problem.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks affect approximately 75-80 percent of pregnant women. As the name suggests, this problem occurs as the result of the skin stretching. Skin creams that contain vitamin E can help minimize this problem. Additionally, women should also make sure that get enough vitamin E in their diet. Almonds, spinach, peanut butter and kiwifruit are excellent sources for this nutrient.
