Glowing Skin or Greasy Skin? How to Get the Perfect Tone

While you may wish for the perfect glowing skin, you may have actually achieved the shine of greasy skin. This is a frustrating problem if you are trying to strike the balance between over-drying your skin and looking as if your skin care regimen consists of primarily petroleum jelly. Here are a few things to remember to get the right kind of glow:

  • Quality skin care starts with eating quality foods.

  • If your main idea of a healthy fat and protein combination is pepperoni pizza, do not be surprised if your face starts to look like one. Adding omega-3 fats from fish and avoiding processed and sugar-laden foods will boost your skin’s health and decrease excess oil production.

  • Proper hydration will flush out impurities.

  • Since your body is primarily made of water, drinking plenty of fluids makes good sense. Your skin is your largest organ, and pure water will keep bacteria moving through instead of seeping through your pores and causing blemishes.

  • Harsh scrubbing will not remove oil.

  • Using cleansers with a lot of chemicals or rough scrubbing action on the skin will actually cause more oil to produce. Gentle is always best when cleansing. If you find a gentle cleanser is not working, buy a product with salicylic acid. Washing once in the morning and once in the evening is enough no matter how oily your skin is.

  • Know what to look for in a face cream.

  • If you have a tendency towards greasy skin, be careful when choosing a moisturizer. Avoid products with an oil base by looking for ingredients that end in “-cone.” Do not make the mistake of avoiding face cream even if your skin is oily. Moisturizers form a protective barrier and benefit all skin types.

  • Avoid alcohol in your skin toner.

  • While you may think you need an alcohol-based skin toner to combat your greasy skin, its use may actually backfire. If you remove too much moisture from the skin, your skin responds by producing more oil. As with your moisturizer, use a gentle product.

  • Seek the advice of a professional.

  • There are some products on the market for extremely oily skin that does not respond to over-the-counter cleansers and toners and gentler skin care methods. Ask your dermatologist if these would be right for you.
