Alcohol’s Relationship to Acne

Everything that a woman puts in her body has a direct or indirect effect on her skin. Alcohol is one of the many things that can have a negative impact on the health and appearance of the skin. Below are some of the ways that alcohol can contribute to acne:
Alcohol can depress the immune system

The immune system helps rid the body of bacteria that can cause acne. Excessive alcohol consumption depresses the immune system, which makes a person more susceptible to acne.
Alcohol can cause a hormonal imbalance

Hormonal imbalance is one of the top causes of acne. An excessive amount of testosterone can cause the sebum glands to produce too much oil, which can lead to acne. Alcohol can cause a hormonal imbalance.

Excessive alcohol consumption damages the liver

The liver is the organ in the body that is responsible for cleansing the body of toxins. It is also responsible for clearing alcohol from the blood stream. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol frequently can damage the liver. This can make it harder for the body to get rid of acne-causing toxins.

Alcohol can shrink the pores

Clogged pores can also cause acne. Alcohol shrinks the pores, which makes it easier for them to become clogged.

Alcohol impairs sleep quality

Many women drink alcohol because it makes it easier for them to fall asleep. However, alcohol can make it harder for a woman to stay asleep. Sleep deprivation often leads to acne.
Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the skin and contribute to poor overall health. That is why women who drink should not consume more than one alcoholic beverage per day.
